Architectural Decor or “AD”, a family owned studio, is continuing the time honored and ancient craft of ceramic tile making. Just as important as our mother, brothers and sisters involvement, so is Sebastian, our studio mascot depicted on our logo. He can be found most days in the shop overseeing our tile making process. Together with the help of extended family, we endeavor to create tiles in the hand made tradition of “one tile at a time”.
All of our Decorative tiles, Trims, Caps and Liners are Pressed and Glazed by Hand and therefore, unlike machine made tiles, they will have their own inherent natural beauty due to the variations in the pressing and glazing process. These qualities are reflected in surface texture and color range, which can only be produced by the skill and art of human hands. Consequently, each tile is an individual on it’s own and when installed with others of like kind, will produce a warm and moving mosaic of color and pattern not unlike the tiles of old that our family endeavors to create. Even our field or flat tile, our only tile machine pressed, is then hand cut and handled many times before being hand glazed to compliment the look and warmth of our hand pressed tiles.
Our designs feature architectural details from antiquity as well as contemporary interpretations within the last several hundred years. An example would be the “Centurion” and “Roman Lady” Decos. Both are derived from Roman coins of 350 BC. As well as the Roosevelt Egg & Dart molding which is inspired by the Teddy Roosevelt remodel of the White House of 1904.
Our Technology fueled world of today races along changing and reinventing itself every 6 months based on the latest technology. In comparison, the Renaissance in ceramics and tile making that we are seeing today is based on an ancient and time involved process. The results are an enduring art form that gives us the ability to express the desire to beautify and enhance our public and private world about us. And it is to this end that we hope you will find many years of pleasure in the selection and placement of our “one tile at a time” hand made tiles.
